Spectra Geospatial SP85 GNSS Receiver

Each month, we will be taking a closer look at some of our favourite pieces of surveying equipment, starting with the Spectra Geospatial SP85 GNSS Receiver.

We like to think that with more than thirty years’ experience of supplying engineering and surveying services to clients all round the world, we know a good product when we see one. And the SP85 GNSS Receiver is right up there with the best of them. This is a next generation GNSS receiver that combines decades of GNSS RTK technology with revolutionary new GNSS processing.

The SP85 systems features the new 600-channel ‘7G’ chipset combined with the patented Z-Blade™ technology, which means it’s optimised for tracking and processing signals from all GNSS constellations in challenging environments.

What’s more, it offers unmatched connectivity in the GNSS receiver market thanks to a unique combination of integrated 3.5G cellular, WiFi and UHF communications with SMS, email and anti-theft technology.

In regions without cellular infrastructure, Trimble RTX is available for the SP85 GNSS receiver via L-Band satellite, while the premium service, CentrePoint® RTX, is the most accurate satellite-delivered correction service available today.

In short, the SP85 GNSS receiver and a Trimble RTX correction service means that high-accuracy positioning is achievable pretty much anywhere in the world – even in areas without cellular service.

The ultra-rugged housing and patented antenna design, combined with the powerful capabilities highlighted above, make the SP85 an extremely versatile turkey solution that can be used with unlimited operation time thanks to its two hot-swappable batteries.

The Key Features of the Spectra Geospatial SP85 GNSS Receiver

Patented Z-Blade™ technology running on up to 600-channel 7G ASIC makes full use of all six GNSS systems, namely: GPS, GLOANASS, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS, IRNSS and SBAS. This is in addition to MSS corrections delivered via L-band.

The SP85 has been designed with field use in mind. Its rugged housing incorporates a host of practical innovations, including dual hot-swappable batteries. These can be easily exchanged in the field, ensuring an interruption-free working day.

With impact-resistant fibreglass reinforced casing designed to withstand a 2-metre pole drop and waterproof to IP67, the SP85 can handle the toughest outdoor conditions.

The SP85 provides unmatched connectivity for the user, thanks to its unique combination of communication technologies, including an integrated 3.5G GSM/UMTS modem, Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, as well as an optional internal UHF transmit radio. The internal UHF transmit / receive radio allows for quick and easy setup, saving valuable time and increasing the surveyor’s efficiency.

Unique anti-theft technology secures the SP85 receiver when installed as a field base station and can detect whether it has been disturbed, moved or stolen. Using this technology, the surveyor can lock the SP85 to a specific location and render it unusable should the device be moved elsewhere.

The Spectra Geospatial SP85 GNSS Receiver User Experience

In December 2020, we provided Spectra Geospatial SP85 GNSS receivers with Ranger 7 data collectors to The Survey School. Operated by The Survey Association (TSA), The Survey School provides training to the whole survey and construction industry.

The survey equipment we rpvided received high praise from the manager of The Survey School, Alan Mansell, FCInstCE, who said; “We believe that the best training can only be delivered using the best equipment and technology available. Having seen the Spectra equipment demonstrated, it became apparent that choosing the Spectra SP85 and Ranger 7 would not be a difficult decision to make”

Surveyors using the SP85 get maximum productivity and reliability every day. The Spectra Geospatial Survey Pro software is specifically tailored for the device, providing easy-to-use, powerful GNSS workflows. The Spectra Geospatial Office software provides a complete office suite for post-processing GNSS data and for adjusting survey data. It can also export the processed results directly back to the field or to engineering design software packages.

With unmatched connectivity, combined with the Spectra Geospatial field and office software, the SP85 is an extremely powerful solution.
