SEP Drainage Surveys Turns 4!

Last week we celebrated our fourth birthday with pizza and homemade cake.  This is a big milestone for SEP Drainage and always a good time to reflect, look at how much we have achieved, and plan the future. Starting off as a division within SEP, the service provided and the scope of the market meant that the department registered as its own company and we have not looked back since.

SEP Drainage Surveys has had its challenges but, has enjoyed many more successes. We are still a developing company, but during our lifetime we have moved to our own offices, increased our fleet dramatically and increased our staff numbers. Our range of services and specialities offered also continue to grow, our aim is to be the North Wests primary contractor but not solely as a Drainage solution.  SEP offers a full range of services that often overlap during drainage requirements such as: Topographical Surveys, CCTV HD Camera, Jetting & Jet VAC, Full Utility Surveying and in-house CAD drawings and maps.

The one stop shop approach offered by SEP drainage cuts down the need for more contractors, one company, one contact, one drawing, one invoice, no problem. We will continue to work hard to grow and expand SEP Drainage Surveys and we now have the staff, fleet and capabilities to do this, it really is exciting times ahead for SEP Drainage Surveys.

100,000 Hours LTI free

SEP Professional Services Ltd & Cargill Site Management teams are extremely proud to announce a major health and safety milestone in completing over 100,000 man hours on the L1C+ project with no time lost time for injury (LTI).

How have we achieved this goal?

This milestone is a significant achievement and is something that many construction projects aim for, but don’t always achieve. A strong focus was placed on identifying and controlling hazards the project team has committed to a safe culture by focusing on Site Safety Rules, with strong visible leadership from management setting an example, reducing exposure to health and safety risks, and supporting the general health and well-being of our team members has ensured we reached this milestone.

This is a team objective and one we wouldn’t have achieved, if not for the hard work and effort from all of our workforce. The focus remains to ensure everyone gets home without harm each and every day and now we have achieved 100,000 hours we are now working towards the next 100,000 hours as the hard work has to continue as before to achieve this.

The work of SEP Professional Services

SEP were approached initially to provide the role of Principal Contractor on this live project. Once on site, SEP were engaged further to fulfill the roles of PMO/CM/PD along with Arc & M&E design for the L1C+ Project. Quickly establishing a defined scope, design & programme to bring control to the project providing safe & efficient coordination to the works SEP have continued to lead this project, keeping staff safe.

Key Benefits of Laser Scanning

What is Laser Scanning?

A laser beam is fired at an object, and by timing the return of the beam to the instrument we can accurately calculate the position of that “point.” By creating millions of points we can create a point cloud in which we can then create a digital version of the item being surveyed  – bringing the real world into the virtual world.

Save Time:

Working at approx 1 million points per second, we create a “point cloud” of data faster than manual methods, we can then get to work straight away back at the office to design and create various meshed or surfaced 3D models that are a great way to create:

  • Structural Plans

  • Virtual Tours

  • Revit Models

  • Technical Specifications

  • Identify key features, elements and edges

Design and Create

What we produce will depend on the needs of the works, however, we think 3D models and virtual tours will be the standard in years to come and provide the wow factor! Imagine being able to offer your client a virtual tour of for example a football stadium or a redeveloped building accurate to a few millimetres. With this data, video fly-through is possible so you can virtually tour the structure without leaving the office or wearing a headset.

Outputs:

The benefit of the data being virtual is it can be manipulated to be used to multiple beneficiaries. Need an elevation and cross-section, no problem. Verticality, 3D Revit and bim models are all possible. We use a  webshare system that enables the user to view their model in a simple and effective way to get the most out of their scan, simple.

This video is a wet well we scanned in pitch black conditions- we are able to add a colour value to each element which is useful for height mapping.

Spectra Z-blade GNSS-centric technology delivers uniquely different benefits

Modern day fast track construction projects need surveyors and site engineers to produce precise results more quickly than ever before. To ensure SEP continued to meet our clients’ demands in developing site surveying and setting-out, finding a reliable and economic solution became a priority. In Spectra Precision surveying equipment we have found that solution.

Over the past four years SEP’s own site engineers and surveyors have rigorously tested Spectra Precision GNSS systems on many challenging projects in all conditions from wind farms and new motorways to power stations and petrochemical plants, reporting excellent results.

Tracking

Any worries regarding GNSS inaccuracy are allayed by the combination of unique all-signals tracking and Z-Blade GNSS-centric technology and L-band capability for satellite-delivered Trimble RTX correction services, with the result the SP60 and SP80 receivers provide the most reliable measurements and the highest possible accuracy under any conditions anywhere in the world.
In 2011 Spectra Precision first introduced the unique Z -Blade positioning technology. This unique technology carefully optimises the combining and data processing of signals from different GNSS systems. The resulting GNSS-centric technology increases RTK position availability in obstructed areas where satellite visibility is limited, resulting in increased productivity and efficiency.

Network Processing

The Z-blades special network processing engine automatically adjusts position computations according to the type of network and base station type, thus mitigating potential issues with GLONASS biases. because the Z-Blade positioning technology is not GPS -centric, even in-band jamming on the L1/L2 bands does not present a problem. For specific applications, there is the option of selecting GLONASS, Beidou or Galileo-only modes. The Spectra Z-Blade technology enables surveyors to increase their accuracy, efficiency and productivity, thus maximising the value of their GNSS equipment investment. other unique technologies such as backup RTK Bridge and the patented inside-the-rod antenna extend the RTK radio range as well as protect the antenna. Combine with a Trimble VRS license and you have a market leading product at a fraction of other manufacturers’ prices.

Interface

Noting very early on the equipment’s user-friendly interface, ease of data transfer and reliable GNSS connection, SEP migrated from using other manufacturers’ systems to using Spectra Precision SP60 and SP80 GNSS receiver packages as well as Spectra Precision Focus robotic total stations. Furthermore, with the unrivalled results and feedback continuing, in 2014 SEP became the main Spectra Precision dealer in the UK, such is our confidence and reliance on the products.

SEP’s clients are also providing very positive feedback demonstrating increased accuracy and productivity along with lower costs. Mark Hayes of Survey & Engineering Projects Ltd stated: “The Spectra equipment has provided us with a cost effective and highly valuable solution, with the Z-Blade technology in the GNSS solutions providing an uninterrupted GNSS position, along with the Focus 35’s powerful robotic tracking. We have been using Spectra equipment for over two years now- it has become the equipment of choice for all of our survey teams – and they would let us know if they preferred a different option but they can see the benefits and use this as their choice out in the field.”

Simon Crowder of Barhale Construction explains

“using geospatial technology has become part of the engineering process and this knowledge is not expected on all schemes. The accuracy and speed achieved far outweighs prior methods and as that high standard becomes the norm we will continue to work alongside SEP to supply all of our surveying equipment due to the fact we can see these terrific results. In addition, we feel we received great value for money to undertake the task at hand. We have built a great relationship with SEP and are in the process of implementing this new equipment across all of our work moving forward.”

Survey and Engineering products offer the construction industry quality surveying and setting out products at the best possible prices. Training is provided and our support doesn’t stop at sale, our Trimble qualified technical department handle queries, repairs and can service your instrument. The Three Peaky Blinders

On 30th June 05:57 – 1st July 04:56 the team completed the three peaks challenge in a time of 22 hours 59 minutes

The National 3 Peaks Challenge is an event in which participants attempt to climb the highest mountains of England, Scotland and Wales within a 24 Hour period. The team included SEP Surveyor Sean Huyton who helped Raise money for clatterbridge cancer charity and heads together. The group were sponsored by SEP as a company and the staff raised over £6,000 for the two charities.

Thanks to everyone who has donated, your generosity has been unbelievable! We thought that our target of £3000 would be very hard to reach but your support has been amazing and we are now close to doubling our initial target (including gift aid!).

Additional thanks to SEP for providing the minibus for us! We’d have really struggled without it, and all being able to travel together really made a big difference!

SEP attend the 146th UK Open at Royal Birkdale

Since 1860 The Open has been played over some of the world’s best links courses and has produced a legacy of great champions. It is the oldest and one of the most prestigious international championships in professional golf and the Claret Jug – first presented in 1873 – is one of the most iconic trophies in all of sport.

The 146th Open took place at Royal Birkdale and our generous director treated staff, clients and family to a day out at the Golf. Meeting, greeting and starting the day off with bubbles our managing director Joe Johnson ensures the drinks are flowing.

Once into the arena, the first stop was the open arms pub, rude not to really. Then the day got serious as we ventured to the first tee to watch some quality golf with Mark O’meara teeing off hoping to avoid the quadruple bogey he suffered on the first day.

Spotted on the first! While most were eagerly anticipating the whip of the club and the crack of the ball, our group were more interested in the Trimble Total Station located across the course – nice to see Trimble being represented at the golf. The steward in orange was looking for it but we spotted it first.

The weather held out as we enjoyed some close ups with the eventual winner Jordan Spieth, home favourite Tommy Fleetwood and superstar Rory Mcilroy. A great day out was had by everyone enjoying world class golf. Pictured below Xander Schaufele holds his putt to make par

“It is great that SEP can continue to attend this kind of event, all those invited had a great day out and as a company, we want to build and maintain great relationships with our clients, staff and engineers and this is a great way to do this. This shows what SEP is about.”

Joe Johnson – Managing Director

Carl Housbey the MD keeping a watchful eye on The Open leaderboard

After a day out on the course, we headed back to the marquee just in time to miss the downpour to keep an eye on the leaderboard while enjoying our evening meal and a laugh or two.

A great day out, shared with great people, want to be involved in the next corporate event? become a client today!
